Anatomical dead space is the portion of the air that is left in the airways after expiration. The reduction of the anatomical dead space is typical for the following situation:
  • Breathing through the mouth 6%
  • Forward flexion of head 5%
  • Tracheostomy 68%
  • Turning the lying patient on his left side 16%
  • Turning the lying patient on his right side 6%

Anatomical dead space is that portion of the airways (such as the mouth and trachea to the bronchioles) which conducts gas to the alveoli.
